Contract with God and Blankets (4 Points)

I love how A Life Force by Will Eisner is a really cool story about the great depression. I love the snippets of news stories that compliment the story. It's really cool to see what was happening during that time period and how certain people would react to the news within their daily lives. I also love the ethinc dynamic of certain characters. It's really interesting to see little hints here and there of the racial/ethnic tensions within the community. Most times when times are hard within America or sometimes other countries the scapegoat used to place blame is normally placed on a different ethnic/racial group. This normally only happens when a person is deeply in trouble and has little to no control over what they can do about it. This still happens to this day and it's still really interesting to see how back in the day they would blame them for issues they could have most likely prevented. Within the great depression time period lots of issues that were happening were not as easy planning ahead. So the racial/ethnic blaming ran more rampant than normal. I really enjoyed reading the story about Elton and Rebecca. My statement above about scapegoating and blame shows itself within this story. The two fall in love with each other but both are concerned with the fact that Rebecca is Jewish and Elton isn't. Rebecca has been worried about her being jewish and what other people/parents think about their relationship instead of the relationship itself. Drawing wise Will Eisner is by far one of my favorite story tellers i've read in a long time. I love the crosshatching and the silhouette helps intensify the frame. I love how penmanship helps define character importance and helps with contrast as well.

Because of this unique comic it has led the way for Blankets to be inspired by. Blankets talking about the life of two brothers growing up uses the same framing and silhouette techniques to increase tensions and drama. This story of growth stays within the same set of characters in a similar setting instead of using a large cast of characters to describe the times. The use of the size changes with characters help give the feeling of the dominant vs the weak. Heavy lines and larger sizes have been adapted from Will Eisner’s comics to give more of a unique way of telling the story.
