Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron (5 Points)

Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron by Daneil Clowes is one of the most interesting comics i've read. The main character, Clay, is the perfect cipher for the reader to relate to. As Clay is trying to figure out why his wife was in a bdsm movie the reader is also confused by the seemingly random events that happen to Clay. Even right before the discovery of his wife is shown the first strange act is a prostitute going up to him, in a movie theater, asking for a good time. From there it only gets stranger. Sex and mental and physical abuse is the main themes in the comic. Randomly one moment while lookign for his wife he gets attacked by cops then lands in a sex cult to find out the leader is a wanted fellon to then just leave to see a fish women. The strangeness continues. Yet while all these things that normally would freakout a person Clay is completely fine. He rarely reacts in the way most people would act, with emotion. Which is why I think he became a great main character. Lots of the side/secondary characters are able to shine and tell their own hardships to Clay and the reader. Lots of times the other characters are looking at the reader as they are telling their stories so it makes the reader feel like they are there. I feel If Clay was reacting to everything around him the reader would also mimic the reaction. His almost emotionless state allows for the reader to reaction for Clay while also being able to continue reading though tough topics of child abadonedment, rape, prostitutions and more. With lots of stories when a main character emotes a lot the reader also will share that character's emotions. Clay leaves a lot of space for each reader to be able to react to each situation in their own way since everyone has their own moral limits.

    Before reading the manga I was able to watch the movies and the anime. The 1995 movie has always stuck in my mind from the moment I saw it until I got to see it again recently. Seeing the anime as a slightly more mature person really made me appreciate the chosen scenes of the anime. Since the anime goes into a more detailed version of a season compared to the manga it brings a whole new perspective on that once scene. For instance the garbage truck scene. In the manga that scene is wrapped up in a few pages the anime gives just about twenty minutes out of the whole hour and 30 mins of the movie to that small scene. Of course up until that part in the manga it had pages and pages of space to explain its world and mechanics to the reader. I don't think they could have picked a better introduction scene for the movie to help explain how the world works. Seduction of the Innocent (2 points)

Censorship of new fads has unfortunately plagued every new medium that kids are stereotyped to use. Just like how video games or adult cartoons get blamed for the issues with children, comics got the same treatment. Since the “adults” are just too lazy or hard fast in their views to actually read a mature comic they think that the comic and not their bad parenting is the reason why their kid can turn bad. The comics used by Dr. Frederic Wethem to show the need of banning adult topics within a medium had little to no damaging ideals. It's confusing to me as to why an adult can look at a movie or a medium they consume but the moment they see some drawings on a paper talking about the same topic they freak out? The same arguments made by Dr. Frederic Wethem are just about the same argument as to why video games are promoting violence. Lone Wolf and Cub vol 1, 2 and 3 (6 Points)

This week I've read Lone wolf and cub by writer Kazuo Koike and artist Goseki Kojima . I've constantly seen this manga being recommended to me by many but had never had the chance to read it myself. I normally would like the stories of older men taking care of children and adventuring around. Lone wolf and cub are just like that storyline and I liked it a lot. Normally the child is a tenager and helps with the fighting in a large way. But this one Daigoro, the child, is one years old. I Loved how the one year old would pee on someone to start a duel. Or him throwing a coin at the women fighter to distacter her while Ogami fights. It's such a cute dynamic. I enjoy seeing little Daigoro and what small action he will do to help his father. Now the father or Ogami Itto. Ogami used to be the Kaishakunin of the person who enforces the will of the shogun. I didn't know the details about the details of what a kaishakunin position was before reading into this flashback arc. I
